Driving in Israel: What the Numbers Do Not Tell You

Israel is a small country, roughly 470 kilometres from north to south, but driving times here are rarely what a map suggests. Traffic between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on a Sunday morning bears no resemblance to the same route on a Thursday afternoon. The calculator above shows you both the distance and the traffic pattern for your chosen date, so you can pick the hour that actually makes sense.

The routes that catch visitors off guard most often:

Tel Aviv to Jerusalem takes 45 minutes at 6am and over 90 minutes during the morning rush between 7:30 and 9:30. The return in the evening is worse. If your flight lands at Ben Gurion and you are heading to Jerusalem, leaving the airport before 7am or after 9am saves significant time.

Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea runs through the West Bank on Route 1, then south. The drive itself is around 90 minutes without stops. Factor in the altitude drop of over 400 metres below sea level and the heat at the destination, especially in summer, and an early morning departure makes the trip considerably more comfortable.

The Galilee is further than most people expect. Driving from Tel Aviv to Tiberias takes around two hours on a good day, and the road through Afula can back up on Friday mornings as Israelis head north for the weekend.

On Fridays and Erev Hag (holiday eves): traffic leaving Tel Aviv and Jerusalem builds sharply from early afternoon. Arriving at your destination before 2pm or after 8pm avoids the worst of it. The Shabbat checker on this site shows exactly which Fridays during your trip coincide with holiday eves, when the afternoon rush starts even earlier.

Petrol stations in Israel are plentiful on major routes but sparse in the Negev desert and parts of the Jordan Valley. Fill up before leaving Beer Sheva if you are heading south.
